We began by understanding the property before deciding how anything would be fitted. Detection equipment, alarm devices and emergency lighting were specified with the building’s construction and appearance in mind, using low-impact fixing methods, concealed equipment and heritage-appropriate finishes wherever the layout allowed it. Our heritage and listed building fire safety work always starts this way: unusual layouts, timber-framed construction and multi-tenancy arrangements common in older buildings all change what a fire risk assessment needs to account for, so the assessment itself was built around the property rather than a standard template.

Fire doors without unnecessary replacement
Original joinery was one of the bigger considerations. Replacing period doors without good reason changes a building’s character quickly, so rather than treating replacement as the default answer, we surveyed the existing fire doors and worked out which could be brought up to standard in place and which genuinely needed replacing.
